Who Invented Coffee?
I like coffee a lot and I’ve often wondered just how did this amazing drink originate. Who discovered coffee and made it into the drink that we all adore nowadays? I did some investigation and this is what I found out:
There are many stories about how coffee was discovered. One of the most popular versions is that about 600 AD, a goatherd tending his goats in the Ethiopian mountains all of a sudden noticed his goats prancing about after consuming some beans in the area. Captivated by this, he took a few of the beans himself and felt alive.
In a nearby monastery there were monks who heard about the astonishing power of the beans and used them to stay awake through all-night prayer vigils. News about the miraculous energy-giving beans spread like wild fire.
Later on Arab traders brought the beans to the Arabian Peninsular. They boiled the beans in water to prepare a drink called qahwa- the basis of the word “coffee” in many languages.
Coffee did not become extensively received in Europe until the first coffee outlet opened in Venice in 1645. 90% of the world’s coffee today is from a seedling that a French seafaring officer stole in 1723 from the Dutch, who first planted coffee commercially in Ceylon and Java.
The United States began drinking coffee since the Boston Tea Party incident when tea was thrown overboard to oppose the expensive levy which was imposed by the British on the North American colony. That is why today it is customary for Americans to drink coffee and the British to drink tea. Today, coffee is the second most valuable commodity traded in the world, valued at almost $9 billion a year.
